Compare the2025 Nissan LeafVS 2025 Kia Niro EV

2025 Nissan Leaf
2025 Kia Niro EV

Safety

The Nissan Leaf has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Niro EV doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Leaf has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Niro EV doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Leaf SV PLUS has a standard Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Niro EV only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Leaf and the Niro EV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available daytime running lights and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The Leaf’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Niro EV runs out after 100,000 miles.

Nissan pays for scheduled maintenance on the Leaf for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Nissan will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Kia doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Niro EV.

There are over 36 percent more Nissan dealers than there are Kia dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Leaf’s warranty.

Engine

The Leaf’s standard electric motor produces 48 lbs.-ft. more torque (236 vs. 188) than the Niro EV’s electric motor. The Leaf PLUS’ standard electric motor produces 13 more horsepower (214 vs. 201) and 62 lbs.-ft. more torque (250 vs. 188) than the Niro EV’s electric motor.

As tested in Motor Trend the Leaf PLUS is faster than the Kia Niro EV:

Tires and Wheels

The Leaf SV PLUS’ tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Niro EV’s 55 series tires.

The Leaf has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Niro EV doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Chassis

The Nissan Leaf may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 200 pounds less than the Kia Niro EV.

Passenger Space

The Leaf has .7 inches more front headroom and .6 inches more front legroom than the Niro EV.

Cargo Capacity

The Leaf has a larger cargo volume than the Niro EV with its rear seat up (23.6 vs. 22.8 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Leaf SV PLUS has a standard Intelligent Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Niro EV doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Leaf owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Leaf will cost $80 to $1300 less than the Niro EV over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Nissan Leaf will be $1632 to $4645 less than for the Kia Niro EV.
